Production Log 11

In week 11 we went out to start filming our music video. We tried out different locations in central London such as famous enough landmarks like the Big Ben and London eye as well as iconic places like southbank and libraries where normal, working class people go and spend their time. We thought these where good locations to film as a lot of young and Middle aged people can be spotted in these areas and so we thought these were locations that many people could relate to.

We also tried to film from different angles to get a verity of facial expressions from close ups to extreme long shots of me and Josh so that our outfits and body language can be seen. While filming if we saw anything interesting that could be used in the digipack we took pictures of them. Even if we wasn't going to use them they were worth having. Due to  lack of synergy we decided not to use the images we took for the digipack leaving us with a lot of work to do.

Production Log: 10

In order to finish both our ancillary products being the magazine cover and digi-pack we had to make a start. This week Sam and I made sure to take all the images needed for the magazine cover. We took a verity pictures of Chris (Lij Gilmour), Josh (The other guy) and Myself (Chris' best friend) this was so we can develop our main idea of telling a heart break story of Lij Gilmour thought out our ancillary products in order to enhance consumer demand.

We also took pictures of only our main artist Chris who plays (Lij Gilmour )in various angles and face expressions in order to have images to pick from when deciding on our magazine cover. In the moment of shooting we thought that we are advertising Lij Gilmour and not the other two and throught it would be a good idea to take individual images of Lij just in case out main idea didn't work.

As I practiced in advanced some photoshopping, the editing of the images wasn't so bad. Through this I did learn a lot such as
-how to layer differen images on top of each other such as cutting the backgroud of Chris and adding the selfie collage of myself for the back ground.
-how to rotate images
-create filters on them
- as well as adding text and working with different colours to make it synergetic with the artist himself being Chris.

Production Log 8

I benefited from going to the first half of the BFI presentation trip as they showed us exemplars of what the highest grade media students get. We discussed what made the music videos get the highest graces by analysing their strengths and weaknesses. This made me think about our ideas and to see if they were suitable for our music video.

I got a lot of information on things that I didn't know but also a recap on things such as using a small amount of locations when filming the music video. In addition, the timing of the shots used within the music videos likewise the colour platte of the music video depending on the genre the song is. For example, we are doing a happy up lifting spent and therefor need to use bright colours to portray this in our music video. We could use the costumes to also show its a live song.

Production Log 9

In week nine during my spare time I took time off to practise my skills on photoshop. I edited some google images that looked similar to what we had in mind. This helped both sam and myself get an idea of what we wanted for our final product. Having done this I did make mistakes when editing images and getting the colours I want. However, this did not matter as it wasn't the final product and still had time to get suitable images and learn from my mistakes.

Sam and I also made sure to complete all paper work. We done this so that we had all holidays to film as paper work wouldn't be getting in the way of making our music video. Having paper work such as production schedule and call sheets done before had helped us keep track of when, why, where and who will be taking part in our recordings. When talking about who would be involved we had to think about cast and who would be the main face of our ancillary products.we made sure to do this before anything as without a cast nothing can actually happen.

To help my team be more organised I crated a group chat on what's app which everyone in the group was involved in. This not only helped us keep track of our meetings, were but also was there for a reminder of when to meet our deadlines so we finish our production on time in order to start post production.

Vox pops

As a group we decided on the outcomes we wanted from our audience by planning the questions we wanted to know from them in advanced. When I done the Vox Pops the most challenging thing was to find mature enough people to to take part in answering the questions we prepared. There was many people to pick from which made it easier for me to move on from the immature interviews and interview sensible people to take part in the vox pops. Having done the vox pops allowed us to understand our target audiences demand and gave us a wider view on what to provide to our audience through our music video.

Recci

In order to get filming we need to have ideas of what locations we are going to use to film in.

A) This is an image of a classroom we planned to use this location because many of our target audience are of a young age bracket being 14 to 25 at this age they are still in school or university. We plan to use this to record myself and josh flirting and playing around while Lij is staring through the door feeling lonely and upset.  Being able to have school facilities is our music video will target our audience in a way that will allow them to connect and feel like they can relate to our music video. This will increase demand as if they listen to the song while being in school they can spread it to other people who can also relate to it. Allowing older consumers who are not in a learning environment how it was to be in school with your crush and hopefully bring back good memories for them.

B) The second image is of the drama studio based in our school. I thought it will be a good idea to film in here not only because we should take advantage of all the resources available to us but also because it had a blank white wall in which we can take images for our ancillary products. In addition filming in the drama studio will allow us to use lighting and a stage for our artist and to make him look like he's performing to real audience,

C) We decided to also film in an opened top bus which gives tours around central London. Filming in the buss will target tourist and take the, inconsideration in our music video as they can be seen as potential target audience. These busses are known for always being in central london, many young people are in central london chilling with friends and having a good time. Filming here will make them feel famous and contribute to their self esteem and increase demand of the music video.

D) We felt that a cafe was a nice, chilled and relaxing place to film a couple having fun and spending their spare time. A lot of young people can be found studying and socialising in cafes and so they will be able to feel part of the music video and understand Lij a little bit more by spending time in places he does and probably talk about similar things.

E) We liked the idea of filming in Burllington Arcade as it sets a romantic atmosphere for the audience. Many people go on dates to arcades at a young age and so we hope to give audience a reminder of how the young life was and it continues to be in 2016.

Production Log 7

This week we done our Vox Pops, This task asked us to pop up to our potential audiences being young adults from the age of 14 to 25 and ask them questions based around our chosen song from 'Lij Gilmour- Hanging Out'. The questions where as following
  • What song does this make you think of? and why?
  • What traits would you most expect or like to see from this artist?
  • What Themes , Locations, Clothing, Artists do you expect to see?
  • What artists and songs do you listen to when you think of your crush or partner?
  • Who is your favourite artist and why?
From these simple questions we received positive feedback from our audiences as they said things that we as a group had thought of before. For example Dalal Rashid a young 17 year old 6th form girl who is from Dubai said that she will expect to see the artist Lij Gilmour dress similar to the artists from the One Direction band. This showed my group and I that One Direction could be a potential competitor for Lij Gilmour..

We also took care of the shooting script this week. We decided that Sam should be in charge of this as she is the editor of our music video and she will be good at estimating the seconds of each shot which made her perfect for for this task. Despite she was in charge of this we all contributed to help out and put in our ideas and finalise the locations, shot types and seconds per shot. This helped us finalise our ideas for the music video. While doing this I also helped us decide on what images to pick for our digi packs and magazine cover.

Production Log 6

This week we started our Getting into our groups and organising ourselves by giving each other appropriate job roles was the main outcome of this week. We had to think about who had the most effective experience and who suites the job role better. The job roles assigned to me was hair and makeup because I am good with styling and picking out the best outfits for everyone. I was also picked to do the graphic designing and flat plans because I enjoy taking pictures and editing them to look their best.  We decided that the music video for our last assignment was going to be Samanthas chosen artist 'Lij Gimour'. We decided this because we felt that a music video for his song 'hanging out' would be nice to play around with and make an interesting music video out of it.

The second task given to us as a group was the beach combing for inspiration as a group task. In this task we was asked to search for videos that could have an influence on our music video idea on 'Hanging Out'. After looking through various artists and songs that can be repeatable to Lij we finalised our ideas on the 3 songs. It was hard as a group to finalise them simply because there was many to pick from and we  had to see what we learnt from these music videos.

Music Video Beach combing

When beach combing for ideas with the rest of the group and spending various time looking through music videos and artist that our chosen music video could have similar conventions to. We finalised the decision on that we could take ideas from the music videos below to inspire us and give us ideas on what to do for out final music video.

Cody Simpson- La Da Dee

The first song we decided on was La Da Dee by Cody Simpson. We decided on this music video due to the locations used when the artist is performing. For example when he's in the cafeteria . This gave us the idea of recording out music video in a restaurant or to stick to our main idea in a cafe shop. We thought this was a good idea because we originally planned to make or music video in a cafe shop because of the relaxing, chilled and laid back atmosphere. The lighting is also bright which makes the music video more uplifting and the high colour palette would also catch, entertain the audience. This related to our music video because the song is called 'hanging out' and it's about a love, happy song, I feel like we can also use some of the props like the guitar to make the music video express the love theme through the guitar playing.

One Direction- Night Changes

The One Direction night changes music video gave us the idea to make our music video handheld and from a Point Of View (POV) perspective. We said this would suite our music video because we wouldn't need to rely on so many people to be in our music video and we can test ourselves using different camera techniques.  The fact that in the music video the artists act like they are on a date with the audience makes the audience feel special. We will like to portray the feeling of being heart broken so that our target audience for our music video idea can feel part of it and so they can relate to the music video. This will allows our music video to be realistic.

Haley- ghost - protagonist

Having the main character in the music video ghost by Haley have sexual interactions with another woman in the music video allows them to attract various audience from all genders. There is not many music videos that contain lesbians and bisexuals and having watched this music video supported out idea of our main protagonist to be a girl who is in love with her girl best friend. In our group we discussed that everyone should have the chance to be heard and understood and we feel that through our music video we could represent all types of relationships including same sex relationships. This will allow us to have a wider range of audiences.

Job Roles

Job Roles

Karen, Jessica and I have decided upon the job roles within our group and why we feel that person is best suited for that role.

  • Director - Sam - It was decided that Sam would be the director of the video as her song was chosen to be used for the final video and we felt that she would be best a guiding the group towards out final vision.
  • Producer - All - We decided that we would all produce the final product as we felt that we would have an important part to play in finishing all the tasks within the brief but would have to maintain continuous communication.
  • Camera women - Jessica - We chose Jessica as leading camera women because I would mostly be in front of our camera as the leading women of the music video and sam would be directing Jessica. We also know that she is very skilled with camera work and has passed experience with using cameras within her AS task so, we feel that she will produce the best result.
  • Editor - Sam - We decided on Sam to be lead editor as this was something that she had past experience with, within the AS task. She has an eye for detail, precision, accuracy and just have a general enjoyment for editing which means that she is more then willing to spend extra time needed to complete it to the best of my ability.
  • Time Management - Sam -  Sam was also chosen to be our time manager because she is the most punctual with her work meaning she will always be up to date with what needs to be done in time for the dead line.
  • Hair + Makeup - Karen -  I was selected for the job role hair and make up artist as I have a great eye for what looks good. I enjoys doing her own hair and make up within her spear time and we feel that she does this very well. She will also be in front of the camera and she knows what costumes and make up will suit her best as playing the character in the music video.
  • Lighting - Jessica - We chose Jessica for lighting as she has had past experience doing this with her AS Media Studies project and her Drama GCSE which means that she knows what lighting will work best for each scene.
  • Casting Director - All - We decided that we should all have a final choice within who we chose as the talent within our  music video as we felt that having more than one opinion on this was important.
  • Location/ Recci Manager - Karen/ Sam - we decided that Sam and I would best suit this task as we know a range of local areas that would suit the video.
  • Photographer/ Directer of photographer - Sam - This was something that Sam did within my AS Media project and is something that she enjoys doing in her spare time so this is something that I will do well with. She is talented and knows the appropriate camera techniques to use in different situations.
  • Call Sheets/ Script writer - Sam - As she is also time manager this is something we decided that I should do due to my good time keeping skills.
  • Graphic Design: Flat Plan/ Typography/Copy Writer  - Karen - We decided that I would be great for this position, this because I enjoys doing design and I am also very artistically creative.
Cast:
  • Josh Q-P - We felt that Josh was best suited to play our leading male as we felt that he has a mature look to him and would be highly reliable to be on time and take it seriously.
  • Karen Cuenca - We felt that I would be best to play our leading lady as she is reliable, part of the media group and that I would best suit the part and will understand what we want for our final outcome.

Meet My audience

Producation Log 5

Getting into groups and deciding which music video we was going to use was the best part of the week. After presenting our individual music video ideas and pitching them to the class their feedback was a mixture of both positive and negative. They made me think about things I could of improved on such as feeling more confident and speaking louder which I could improve next time by preparing in advanced and making little flash cards of notes that will help me deliver a more clear and understanding presentation. In my pitch I used my research from other posts such as my beach combing and m search for my artist to help me deliver a more secure and informative presentation.

Music Video Lyrics

'Hide behind that pretty face', 'believing' and 'lies' this already shows me that this song is about someone not being them true selves and hiding between their looks when in reality their personality is ugly. I have already seen a way to portray this in the narrative of my music video showing a couple meeting on social media like Instagram which is an a
pp where you upload images of yourself. They then meet in person after talking a long time on social media to find out that the guy is a total douche bag that talks to many girls in the same romantic way.

From 'All about you' and 'rearranging' I thought of recording a guy being vain and recording and taking lots of pictures of himself because he thinks everything is about him. He is also moving pictures around on his phone while she's watching him to relate back to the lyrics where it says 'watching all your rearranging'. To make the music video funny I thought off using 'out do yourself'' as the girl telling him to wear make up while he's doing his hair to make him look more in love with himself.

Music Video Pitch Evaluation

When I pitched my music video to the class they thought it was a good song choice and that the ideas I had for the music video were suitable and relates to the music video. I felt that my ideas were clear enough so that my audience could understand the points I was trying to make however, I thought that that I could have explained and expanded on the things I said in my pitch to make sure that my audience understood.

The feedback I received from my audience allowed me to think about elements that I haven't thought of. Such as expanding on my locations just in case the beach on the river themes doesn't work out in the winter. I had thought of filming in an arcade as a lot of couples go there on dates so I could use that as a flash back scene in the music video. I thought about a park on the spot as you see a lot of couples going for a walk in parks. A lot of single people are also found in parks and as my song is about breaking up sang by a strong independent female I could make a contrast between this when filming the music video.

I should of also made my target audience a big part of my presentation and refereed everything back to the audience when making a point as I found that a lot of questions I got asked were related back to the audience. In terms of costume I feel like I wouldn't use extravagant clothing and stick to casual clothing as the budget we have is not high and we therefore need to work with that everyone has in their wardrobe. Emanuel one of my suggested artists dresses like a hipster and thought it links good with the music video as  we might get a verity of audience through this method. I should of made this clear in my pitch as I was asked who will I be targeting through this. Yes, my main target audience is girls from the age of 13-14 to 29 however, it can also be watched by males who like the hipster clothing of the male artist seen in the music video. The more audience the higher profit so why not try to target as many people as I can? I believe there is no limit in target audience and everyone should feel free and comfortable to watch my music video.

Permission Email

In order to start filming I had to make sure that I had permission from the artist to use her sons and lyrics to  help me complete my media project. This is to prevent copy right illegal actions taken upon using a song that is not mine. I therefore found Amanda Kaletsky's email and Facebook and messaged her via both platforms to see if I got and answer. She replied saying it was ok for me to use her song and wanted a confirmation email from my teacher.

Beach combing

Beachcombing

This is a conceptual music  video and  has inspired me to have an opposite sex to singing the song I have chosen. I say this because in the music video of Carly Rae Jepsen Tom Hanks is seen singing her song. Tom Hanks is a famous actor and having a voice over of her song while he is lip singing engages with the audience as it brings humor. The narrative  also seems to includes him doing what he does in his everyday life. I have thought of doing something like this for my music video because there is no repetition in the visuals shown and doing this for my music video would keep the audience entertained as they haven't seen something like what i've created before. If I create a music video where not only my artist appears but also the audience would show the audience that they are a big part of the career of my artist.

When talking about costume I think that Taylor Swift's outfits in her music video 'you belong with me' are suitable for my music video. I say this because it's a casual and smart look, at the same time it shows a contrast in what she wears from her two different roles she plays in the music video.  For example the purple and black squared body warmer and the stripy shirt has relations to 'nerd girls' and to enhance her look of a 'nerd she has two pony tails and big glasses to complete her look. Opposite to this we have the cool girl which dresses which the mini skirt and the fancy car. I like that in this music video this is done because it allows her to have a variety of audiences. I think this is suitable for my music video only because I think that the audience can relate to the clothes they wear not only because it portrays what high class people wear but also because people that don't have much disposable income can relate as well. It would make the audience feel part of the artist's world as they can wear similar clothes to her specially to those audiences that would like to sing similar music.
Hilary Duff apart from being an actress she is also known for her pop genre vocals. The audience as well as myself can identify it's a pop genre because of the classical instruments being played in the background which include the guitar and piano.  In addition to this, the lyrics can also be identified as pop genre because of the subject being love. My artists is also a pop genre artists. I think that  Hilary Duff could be a competition to my artists and because of this they would also have similar target audiences, These target customers for my artist would be young girls aged 13 and over from a white background as well as guys who are interested in woman  being the same age.

I would like to have fast paced editing like in Ed Sheerans 'Sing' music video and the editing all depends on how fast the tempo and the beat of the song goes. In my opinion this is a way to keep the audience entertained and engaged with the music video as they would constantly see the background images changing. I think this is a good way for my audiences to listen to my artists song and get to know my artist through the images shown in the music video. Whether the music video I would create is a narrative or an interpretative, the images portrayed would relate to the lyrics and get the audience thinking of the plot or the reason of the video the music video is the way it is and how it can be related to the lyrics of the song.

There are also a variety of shots used in the music video of 'all eyes on you' by Meek Mill ft Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown such as the following which i thought I could use in my music video due to the significance it  has upon the lyrics of the song:

Close ups:
Close Ups to show my artists emotions as shown by Meek and Nick, so if a person can't hear the song then they would be able to identify what the song is about as the visuals match the single due to the fact its going to be a narrative.
Medium close ups:

I would also like to include medium close ups to show the actions of my artists while being in a certain scene. This would be done to enhance the importance of their actions as they can mean a lot due to the fact that the actions also reflect on the music itself.

and long/ establishing shots:
Lastly I would also use establishing shots to highlight where the music is going to be taking place. As you can see on the left there is a picture of the inside of the house that that the whole music video takes place in. However, i think that doing this in my music video would all relate to the lyrics and the genre of the music video and there for the locations should be highlighted due to their importance.

Flat Plans

For our final product apart from a Music Video we also have to create ancillary products for our re branded artist Lij Guilmour. As a group we analysed the song lyrics and the Song to see what we could relate and think about when we listen to it. After doing this we gathered our ideas and decided on one of our best ideas and design a draft of a magazine cover and Digi pack.

You will be able to see our drafts below:

 Magazine Adverts:

Digi - Packs:

We decided to pick my Digi pack as the best draft and potential finalised idea. Likewise Sams Magazine advert as we felt that they would work well together and have synergy between them so that the audience can identify the artists Digi pack from the magazine advert. Making it easier for our audience to find and buy our products.

Production log 4

Continuing my research this week we was asked to look at different magazine covers on music videos and digipacks. Doing research on this allowed me to gain inspiration and new ideas on what to do for my digi pack and magazine cover. Within the blogs i done based upon the digi packs and the magazine covers i learnt that colours can have different meanings depending on what they are used to display. Such as the colour red being romantic to draw in the attention of guys. Likewise the images themselves the pose and structure the artist is making and what they are representing through the images and what they expect their audience to understand from it.

Digi-Pack Analysis

Digipack 1:

The Beyonce digipack includes various images of her posing in the background. Her femininity is used to attract both her female and male target customers. I say this because her female customers would want to be as sexy as her or she might be a role model for them. I think that Beyonce is used to attract her male customers through her body and her beauty. This refers to Laura Mulvey's 'Male Gaze Theory' which includes woman being used as sexual objects in order to attract male audiences. Beyonce's B-Day album includes a blurb in which gives customers an insight to the background of the artist by giving information on the awards she has won, the job roles she has taken as an artist such as actress and model as well as giving some personal details. As her target audience starts from a young age range she made sure to include a pack shot of her other albums.  We all know that Beyonce is a well-known star not only in the UK but all over the world and having designed her disc as a gramophone disc portrays her success as a singer. Allowing her fans to have a disc in form of a gramophone one allows them to feel part of her success, and could possibly be targeting her elderly fans. As the discs were used in old generations, which allows the audience to feel like it's a traditional album.

 Digipack 2:

The Katy Perry digipack has a theme throughout her album and songs being a candy theme.Taking the example of her song California girls number 1 music video which includes Katy Perry in a land of candy, reflects on her album digipack as her fans can identify that she is the singer of the song. To enhance this the songs of her album including California girls is added on one of the pages and this would also allow the customers to identify who the singer is. The disc is also designed to fit the candy theme, as they have a doughnut and sweet design on them. Having followed this theme target her young targets and would allow her older customers to connect with their childhood as it would remind them of their teenage life. Again the name of the album is also suitable as it's called teenage dream so it would not only remind her middle aged customers about their teenage lives but also the dreams they had as a teenager. This would increase demand because they would allow their kids to purchase her album but they would also want to know what the album contains. The candyfloss look alike writing is also continuous as it is part of the theme and helps builds on to the customers recognition towards the album and the artist. The digipack also contains _____ showing her gratitude to everyone who helped put the album together such as the executive producers. Lately, it also contain extra details of where she can be found to build up on her customers knowledge of her.

Digipack 3:

The recovery album of Eminem has strong connotation to his past and from simply the name of the album it shows that Eminem is just now recovering from  the rough past he has gone throught. The main image of the album digipack shows Eminem walking on the middle of an empty road which could reflect on the fact that despite the suffering he has had, from getting to where he is there is still a long way for him to fully recover from his past. The fact that rap is usually related to the streets is also highly significant in the main image as he did start rapping on the streets. Emphasising the natural lighting on the cover also portrays that the recovery album would also be natural in terms of him writing the songs himself and that the audience would get an insight on his life through this album. The disc itself has a white cross which is usually related to hospitality which shows this album is going to go in depth of the past he had suffered. The juxtaposed inside cover image contains himself in an urban environment with fancy furniture which is shown to portray his success in the music industry. Adding on to this the fact he has a transparent glass over where he is standing shows that he has nothing to hide and that the album would
solely focus on himself and his feelings.
